What is confirmed: Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, not as Tony Stark but as Victor Von Doom. The Russo brothers came back to direct, Michael Waldron and the McFeely brothers have the script, and the movie opens December 18, 2026 as the first half of the Multiverse Saga finale, with Secret Wars slotted for December 2027. The cast list reads like a convention floor: Pedro Pascal’s Fantastic Four, the original Fox X Men returning (Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and the full First Class crew), Hailey Atwell’s Peggy Carter variants, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing, and the whole Thunderbolts bench.
The trailers have been stingy and smart about it. Doom’s first full appearance leaned on the Endgame encore footage, a visitor collecting Bruce Banner from the most secure place on Earth, and the official marketing has treated the mask like a spoiler. The first poster showed Doom from behind and Downey captioned it Doom does not knock. Alan Silvestri is back on the podium.
The honest worry is density. Two universes, three teams, one very large Doom, 165 minutes, and a sequel nine months a year away. The Russos pulled off Endgame because every thread had ten years of setup; this one has the Fox rights restored the same year. We think the opening weekend will be huge and we think the fan verdict will be louder than usual either way. December 18.
