Courtney Whitmore finds a cosmic staff in her stepfather’s basement and learns the Justice Society of America is not history, it is homework. Brec Bassinger’s brightness powers the whole show: this is a teen superhero story played with total sincerity, no irony armor anywhere.
Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan, the mechanic sidekick turned stepdad, gives the show its soul: the intergenerational partnership between Courtney and S.T.R.I.P.E. is the best parent-child dynamic in superhero TV. The Injustice Society makes for a properly menacing first season, and the show keeps its small-town heartland setting as a real place. Three seasons, complete story, gone too soon. The most wholesome show in the DC lineup, without ever being soft.
