Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is a four episode CGI anime that catches up with Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield in 2006, between the events of the games. Leon investigates a hacking incident at the White House that turns into an outbreak. Claire is lobbying on a humanitarian aid trip and finds a young survivor drawing pictures of something that should not exist. Nick Apostolides and Stephanie Panisello voice the two leads.
The animation is the selling point. It is genuinely beautiful, with lighting and creature detail that outclass most game cutscenes, and the action scenes are choreographed like someone storyboarded a Resident Evil 4 playthrough. As a piece of fan service it is frequently great.
As a story it is thin. Four episodes of about twenty five minutes each leaves no room for the horror to breathe, and the new characters, Jason and Shen May, get a plot that resolves in a rush. It plays like a stretched cutscene, which is either a compliment or the whole problem depending on how much you love these games.
Our take: fans of the games should watch it once for the Leon and Claire reunion. Everyone else can skip it and lose nothing. For a bigger swing at the franchise on the same service, see our review of the 2022 live action Resident Evil series.
