Matt Ryan is John Constantine. That is the review, but the show earns more words: a chain-smoking Liverpudlian exorcist doing battle with demons while carrying the guilt of a soul he failed to save, played with such perfect casting that DC kept bringing Ryan back for years, in animation, on Legends, everywhere.
One season on NBC, too scary for network, cancelled before its time. The episodes we got are faithful Hellblazer in all but cigarette count: Newcastle guilt, a Rising Darkness, and a trench coat full of tricks. The arc continues in the animated City of Demons and on Legends of Tomorrow. Watch the thirteen episodes, then mourn what could have been the best horror show on TV.
