Daryl washes ashore in France, and the show somehow turns that into the most beautiful thing the franchise has ever filmed. Shot like a European art film with walker money, the first season follows Daryl shepherding a boy who may matter to the future of humanity across a broken, gorgeous country, and it quietly becomes a meditation on guilt and belonging.
Norman Reedus has never been better, the French setting and cast are tremendous, and the Carol episodes (Season 2, The Book of Carol, reuniting the franchise’s great friendship) stick the emotional landing. The show’s next chapter moves the action onward again, and the quality has held.
You do not need the full flagship run: the essential context arrives naturally.
Our take: 8/10. The most cinematic Walking Dead has ever been.
