The show that made zombies prestige television and kept the entire horror genre on the map for over a decade. Rick Grimes wakes from a coma into the apocalypse, and what follows is 177 episodes of survival drama where the walkers are the least of the threats: the real monsters are always the living.
The honest guide everyone needs: Seasons 1 to 5 are elite television, one of the best runs the genre has ever produced. Seasons 6 to 8 wobble badly (the cliffhanger pattern and pacing nearly killed the show). Seasons 9 to 11 stage a genuine late-career renaissance under new showrunner Angela Kang that older fans mostly missed, and the Commonwealth arc ends the flagship with real dignity.
Start at the beginning. If you hit the season 8 wall, know the show you loved comes back.
Our take: 8.5/10. A landmark series that earned its place in television history twice.
