Each season takes one institution in Baltimore, the police, the docks, city hall, the schools, the press, and shows how it fails the people inside it. David Simon was a police reporter and it shows: nobody is a cartoon, the drug crews have org charts, and the good guys lose as often as the bad. Stringer Bell, Omar Little, McNulty: television’s greatest characters live here.
It starts slow by design. The first four episodes are homework, and then it becomes the show you measure everything else against. If you have never seen it, this is the one.
