The show that changed television — and the cautionary tale of how to end one. Adapted from George R.R. Martin’s unfinished novels, Game of Thrones turned fantasy into prestige TV: political intrigue with dragons, where main characters die because that’s what happens to people who make mistakes. Seasons 1-4 are as good as TV gets — the Red Wedding remains the most shocking hour ever broadcast, and The Lion and the Rose proves the show could make you cheer a murder.

Tyrion’s trial monologue, Hardhome, the Tower of Joy reveal — the peak run is untouchable, carried by a once-in-a-generation cast (Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Charles Dance’s Tywin, Maisie Williams’ Arya). Then the source material ran out. Seasons 5-8 compress a decade of story into bullet points; character arcs bend to hit plot waypoints (Daenerys’s turn to fire and blood needed two seasons, not two episodes), and the finale satisfied no one.

Verdict: Watch it anyway. Four seasons of all-time-great TV don’t get erased by a stumble at the finish.
