The answer to the question every new fan asks: do I really have to watch 291 episodes of Z? Dragon Ball Kai is the official recut, trimming the original series down to about 159 episodes by removing the filler arcs and the legendary padding. Same story, same voices, remastered picture, roughly two thirds of the runtime.
The tradeoffs are honest: you lose the iconic Faulconer score from the US broadcast (Kai uses the Japanese score), a couple of fan favorite filler moments like the driver license episode, and some of the long dramatic pauses that gave Z its slow burn atmosphere. What you get in exchange is DBZ at manga pacing, which for a first watch in 2026 is the right call for almost everyone.
Watch Kai if you want the story. Watch Z if you want the experience. Either way, our DBZ filler list tells you exactly what the difference is.
