A Japanese macaque witnesses an assassin’s death, takes up his guns and his grudge, and wages an one monkey war on Tokyo’s yakuza, guided by the ghost of the dead hitman (Jason Sudeikis, a wisecracking American specter who can’t quite believe his afterlife either). The show is exactly as ridiculous and as violent as the premise promises: R-rated action comedy with genuinely sharp animation and a body count that would make John Wick blink.
The ghost mentor double act (the monkey’s silence vs. Bryce’s constant commentary) is a perfect comic engine, and the show sneaks in real feeling, grief, revenge, the strange bond between a dead man and the beast carrying his war. Season 2 moves to New York and keeps the machine running. A cult item, proudly.
Verdict: Watch it if the premise makes you smile. That’s the target audience, and it hits.
