Damon Lindelof’s answer to the question everyone says should not be asked: what do you do after Watchmen? Not a remake, a sequel that only uses what the book left lying around, set in a world where the graphic novel exists as fiction inside the story and the mask is a police uniform.
Regina King’s Angela Abar is one of the great performances in prestige television, a whole season of faces before the truth arrives, and Jeremy Irons plays the saddest mansion in television history. The Tulsa opening, which takes the book’s most dangerous idea (a police force wearing masks because Rorschach made martyrdom fashionable) and pulls it forward sixty years, is the best hour of television 2019 produced. The Westworld episode is an argument with a theme park. The ending is a love letter to Doctor Manhattan that earns its second.
All nine hours are tight. The finale is the one episode the internet is still chewing on, which is the point.
