Three seasons in, the Maggie and-Negan companion series has settled into its identity: a moody Manhattan set two hander about two people who can’t stand each other and can’t let each other go. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan remain the reason to watch, their scenes together carry the show’s entire emotional weight, a long form study of whether forgiveness is possible when the debt is a dead husband. Season three wraps the Manhattan arc (finale September 13), and the series has quietly become the most consistent of AMC’s TWD spin offs by keeping its scope small: one damaged relationship, one ruined city, a new generation of survivors complicating both. The walkers are set dressing now, the horror is human, and Morgan’s Negan remains one of television’s great reformed monsters, a character who earns his redemption arc in inches. If the franchise burned you out years ago, this is the one spinoff that rewards a return trip: short seasons, contained story, two actors at the top of their game playing characters who despise each other’s company as much as we enjoy it.
