Scavengers Reign
Our Review
The most beautiful alien world ever animated. The survivors of the starship Demeter crash on a planet the show treats with total biological seriousness: every lifeform is part of a functioning ecosystem — predator, symbiote, parasite, pollinator — and the humans are simply the newest organisms trying not to be processed by it. The design (from Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner’s short film) is imagination unbound: every frame introduces something no other show has ever drawn.
The human stories — scattered crews crossing the planet, the Azi-and-Levi thread (a robot’s… a consciousness awakening) — give it a philosophical spine under the survival horror. Canceled by Max, rescued by Netflix’s… the fan campaign continues, but the season that exists is complete, and it’s a genuinely singular work — the best hard sci-fi animation of the century.
Verdict: Watch it. Television’s purest sense of wonder since Avatar asked the question.
