Our Review
The most visually audacious superhero show ever made, and barely a superhero show at all. David Haller (Dan Stevens, a finest work performance), diagnosed schizophrenic, discovers that what he’s called illness may be power, he’s a mutant, possibly the most powerful telepath alive, and Noah Hawley (Fargo) renders his interior as cinema: dance numbers, silent film narration, unreliable edits, whole episodes inside delusions. The only superhero show that can honestly be called art.
Season 1 (the Clockworks delusion within-delusion, the Shadow King reveal. Aubrey Plaza as the parasite wearing his friend’s face) is one of the great TV seasons of the 2010s: every frame composed. Season 2 deepens; season 3 closes the trilogy with a time loop love story ending that resolves the show’s thesis, mental illness, godhood, and the humanity between, with genuine grace. No other show looks like this. No other show thinks like this.
Verdict: Watch it. The X-Men universe’s 2001, pure cinema.
