Our Review

James Gunn took over DC Studios and his first film spends no time on an origin: Superman already flies, the world already watches him, and the story is about whether trust can survive a century of collateral damage. David Corenswet plays Clark with open faced decency, Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois is a sharp, skeptical reporter who gets an actual interview scene that doubles as a relationship test, and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is a vain tech billionaire seeding public distrust through think tank proxies and engineered disasters.

The film is packed to the brim: a kaiju assault on Metropolis, a pocket universe prison, a Justice Gang of second stringers, Krypto the superdog causing chaos in the Fortress, and a mid film pileup of side missions that threatens to capsize everything. It is overstuffed by design, and the seams show in the back half, where the plotting turns into a relay race between set pieces.

But the warmth is real, the jokes land, the creature design is a delight, and Gunn’s sincerity, the ingredient that made his Guardians pictures work, keeps the whole balloon in the air. After a decade of mopey capes, this franchise finally remembers its main character is supposed to be a good guy, and builds a universe around that idea. Our score: 7/10. A confident, busy, big hearted restart.
