Against every possible expectation, Sony’s PG-13 Venom works, mostly because Tom Hardy decides, somewhere between the tongue and the drooling dialogue, that Eddie Brock is a sitcom and symbiote Venom is his straight man. The banter is the movie, and Kelly Marcel’s script lets it derail every scene it should be tightening.
84% on Rotten Tomatoes on the strength of that double act. Riz Ahmed phones in his paycheck, Michelle Williams gets nothing to do, and the final fight is a CGI smudge of two black blobs. Still, the last twenty minutes, the prison cameo especially, are the most fun Sony has had with the license.
A guilty pleasure that isn’t actually guilty, just dumb. 6.5 out of 10.
