The quiet one, and the most interesting Fox entry between First Class and Logan: James Mangold takes Wolverine to Japan, strips out the ensemble, and makes a death-wish samurai film about a man who cannot die among people who must. The Silver Samurai, the Yakuza machinery, the atomic bullet sequence on the train, the action is deliberately smaller and lands harder for it.
The Yukio and Mariko threads sell the melancholy, Rila Fukushima’s fox masks are the best visual in the film, and the final graveyard scene with Patrick Stewart’s Xavier walking in out of nowhere is the single best scene of the franchise’s whole confused middle act. The 6.7 on IMDb reflects a third act that remembered it was a comic book movie on a studio mandate.
