Marc Webb’s reset, the franchise equivalent of a sophomore album: genuinely great leads in Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, whose Peter and Gwen are the most natural screen couple the character has had, attached to a mystery box plot about Peter’s parents that the sequel abandoned. The suit design, the mechanical web-shooters, the Lizard, all serviceable.
71% on Rotten Tomatoes, enormous box office, and a franchise that blinked. The street level scenes sell Garfield’s physical comedy; the father’s mystery thread never earns its screen time. If Sony had let Webb finish the parents story, this might sit higher in memory.
Watch it as the Gwen Stacy movie that the third act knows it is. 6.5 out of 10.
