The patient, grey, sincere film that kicked the door in, and you can feel every frame worrying about whether comic books could be taken seriously. Bryan Singer plays it as immigration drama: the mutant metaphor is the thesis, the Senator Kelly hearings are straight McCarthyism, and Stewart and McKellen treat Xavier and Magneto like two old friends on opposite sides of a philosophical split that will not heal.
McKellen’s Magneto announces a leather-physics genre and Jackman, a last minute replacement, plays Logan as the only character who knows he is in a movie. The action is restrained by modern standards, the Statue of Liberty climax is pure amusement park, and the 7.3 on IMDb is honestly too harsh for the film that deserves most of the credit for the last twenty six years of this entire genre.
82% on Rotten Tomatoes, 690K IMDb votes, streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. A period piece that made history. Seven and a half.
