Xena: Warrior Princess started as a Hercules villain and became something better than the show that spawned her. Lucy Lawless plays a former warlord trying to pay down a very long debt of bad deeds, one good act at a time, with her friend Gabrielle at her side. The chemistry between the two leads is the engine of the whole series.
The show swings hard between comedy, tragedy, and full on musical episodes, and somehow all of it works. It was doing long form character redemption years before prestige TV made that fashionable, and it treated its two heroines as the center of the story without apology.
Bruce Campbell drifts through as Autolycus more than once, and the Hercules crossovers kept both shows feeling like one big world. For a 1995 syndicated fantasy, it was quietly one of the most ambitious things on television.
