Hercules: The Legendary Journeys is the show that proved syndicated fantasy could actually work. Kevin Sorbo plays the demigod with a wink, wandering ancient Greece and fixing problems with his fists and a fairly loose relationship with mythology. It never takes itself too seriously, and that is the whole trick.
The real reason it holds up is the guest cast. Bruce Campbell shows up as Autolycus, the self declared King of Thieves, and steals every scene he is in. The show knew exactly what a fun episode looked like and kept making them for six seasons.
It also launched something bigger. Xena got her start here as a villain before spinning off into her own show, and the two series shared a universe in a way TV barely did back then. Watch it for the charm, stay for the Campbell episodes.
