Picard is a show about an old man mourning the future he helped build, and it’s at its best when it stays in that register. Patrick Stewart returned as Jean-Luc a devastated recluse after Romulus’s destruction and Starfleet’s moral collapse, the opening episodes are genuinely great TV: lonely, angry, elegiac. The season 1 arc (rescuing a Soong type android who may be Data’s daughter) wobbles when the plot machinery takes over, but the Data farewell hits as hard as anything in the franchise.
Season 2 time travels to 2024 and gets lost; season 3 is the real payoff, a full Next Generation reunion that plays like a victory lap, with a genuinely great new ship (the Titan) and a Changeling conspiracy that gives every legacy character a real beat. The Riker/Troi material is the best acting in the whole series. It’s fan service, but it’s earned fan service.
Verdict: Watch it, power through season 2, because season 3 is the goodbye the cast deserved.
