The strangest Spider-Man cartoon ever made, and we mean that with affection. Sony kept the movie rights and kept most of the 1994 series’ style, but the premise went feral: Peter hijacks a shuttle to chase John Jameson, lands hard on Counter-Earth, and stays there, a human resistance fighter in a techno organic suit battling the High Evolutionary’s animal people regime. No Aunt May, no Daily Bugle, no Flash, twelve thousand miles from Queens.
It was pulled from Fox Kids after three weeks because Pokemon owned the timeslot, then dribbled the rest of its 13 episodes out through 2001. The serialized storytelling was ahead of its time for Saturday morning, the Mainframe CGI was mixed, and Rino Romano sings a genuinely great theme. 6.3 on IMDb, 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a cult that never gave up on it.
It surfaces on Disney+ most months and rotates onto Prime Video. Watch it as the what if curiosity it is, ideally right after the 1994 series finale.
