Before the films made the team a household name, FOX ran an Avengers cartoon for thirteen episodes in the fall of 1999 and then pretended it never happened. Hawkeye leads the team from a warehouse in the Bowery, Wasp wears a visor nobody in the comics ever approved, and every episode has a villain monologuing at half the budget the animation could afford.
And still, there is a reason fans keep the show alive. The team sounds like coworkers, the banter has a dry edge the later cartoons lost, and the theme song is pure 1990s brass swagger. It was canceled for the X Men cartoon getting better ratings, which tells you everything about kids television then and now. Howard Stern clips, a Spider Man cameo contract problem, one season.
5.2 on IMDb is fair, and we score it a touch higher, 5.5, for honesty about what it is: a curio for completists and a strange time capsule of the era when Marvel characters were everywhere except on TV in their own shows. Thirteen short episodes, best watched with the volume down and expectations parked. It surfaces on Hulu and Disney+ depending on the month.
