Our Review

The orphan with a fox demon sealed inside him who wants to become Hokage — the shonen archetype that defined a generation. Naruto Uzumaki’s journey from village outcast to hero is the genre’s definitive underdog story, and at its best (the Chunin Exams, the Sasuke Retrieval arc, the Pain arc) it’s as good as battle shonen gets: tactics-driven fights where the smarter, more determined fighter wins, a deep jutsu system that rewards planning, and a theme — hard work and empathy can bridge any gap — delivered with total sincerity.

The caveats are famous: the pre-Shippuden filler stretch (85+ episodes of non-canon detours) is the worst filler block in the genre’s history, and the war arc’s escalation strains the early series’ grounded charm. But the highs — Naruto vs. Neji, the Gaara fight, Kakashi’s backstory, Jiraiya’s death and its aftermath — are untouchable. Watch with a filler guide and the odyssey becomes one of animation’s great journeys.
