The one they never expected from the genre: Mangold closes the Fox era as a Western about aging, Logan as a limo driver in 2029 with a failing body and a hidden Laura, the Mexico border crossing as the last road movie a man like him takes. Hugh Jackman plays every scar, the whole film is about what a body does to a man who was not allowed one.
Dafne Keen’s X-23 is the breakout of the franchise, Patrick Stewart’s dementia turn is the bravest thing a superhero film has ever asked of an actor, and the ending plays like Shane, a gunfight nobody should have to watch. The 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, the 8.1 on IMDb, the first superhero film nominated for the Writers Guild top prize: numbers that describe a real film, not a franchise product.
