The test footage leak that became a franchise: Reynolds’ mature rated mercenary comedy proved the audience was bigger than the studio’s courage and rebuilt what a comic movie could be. The fourth wall is a character, the love story is genuinely sincere under the chimichanga, and Ed Skrein’s Ajax is the best villain the franchise never reused because the studio got scared.
The opening highway battle, one continuous take of gore, the taxi driver scenes, the time machine button mashing the movie plays like a laugh track, the film is a perfect 108 minute tightrope between sincere and stupid, and it falls on the sincere side every time it counts. 8.0 on IMDb from 1.2 million voters, 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest voted hero comedy of the decade.
