The direct sequel to Zeta, and the strangest pivot in the franchise. Zeta ended in tragedy, ZZ opens with slapstick. A junk collector named Judau Ashta steals the Zeta Gundam to sell for parts, and ends up leading the fight against a dying Zeon remnant instead.
The first half’s comedy is real whiplash after Zeta’s ending, and the show knows it, because midway through the tone turns back toward war and stays there. By the end it carries the weight the timeline demands, and Judau grows into one of the franchise’s most likable leads.
Forty seven episodes, 1986. The awkward middle child of the Universal Century that fans defend harder every year.
