Our Review
Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai turned into a 26-episode anime, and somehow it works. The setup is the same as the 1954 film: a rice village robbed every harvest by mechanized bandits hires seven hungry samurai to fight back. What the anime adds is room, twenty-six hours to know each swordsman instead of three.
The look is early-2000s Gonzo at full burn: steam-powered mecha hybrids stalking medieval villages, farmers who fear their protectors as much as their enemies. The show’s best trick is keeping Kurosawa’s question intact, can honor survive poverty, and letting the answer stay complicated.
It drags in the middle the way 26-episode shows do, but the finale pays everything back with interest. Watch it as a companion to the film and it hits even harder. A criminally under-seen adaptation that respects its source instead of renting it.
