A box that is bigger on the inside, a two hearted alien with a police box, and six decades of reinvention. Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction show on Earth for a reason: every few years the Doctor regenerates into a new lead, the show resets its personality, and a new generation falls in love.
This entry covers the modern era from 2005 onward: Christopher Eccleston’s wounded war survivor, David Tennant’s beloved star turn, Matt Smith’s mad professor, Peter Capaldi’s cranky poet, Jodie Whittaker’s first female Doctor, and Ncuti Gatwa’s current joyful era. The honest guide: start with the 2005 relaunch (skip the 1963 classic run for now, it waits patiently), and if an era does not click, the next regeneration is a fresh start. That is the show’s superpower.
Blink. The Girl in the Fireplace. Heaven Sent. The best episodes stand with anything on television, and the worst are gone in 45 minutes. No show has a better hits to misses ratio over this span.
