The Clone Wars‘ victory lap, and the story of what happens to soldiers when the war ends. Clone Force 99, the “Bad Batch”, genetically mutated commandos whose defects made them superior, discover their inhibitor chips don’t work, making them the only clones who can disobey Order 66. What follows is a fugitive story: Hunter, Wrecker, and Tech navigating the Empire’s rise with Omega, a mysterious child clone, in tow, while Crosshair, the sharpshooter whose chip did fire, serves the enemy.
The show is at its best when it’s quiet: the batch doing mercenary jobs, watching the Republic they served turn fascist, encountering other clones adjusting (or not) to irrelevance. Season 3 pays everything off. Tech’s sacrifice, Crosshair’s redemption, and a finale that gives the squad a real ending. The animation is movie quality, and Michelle Ang’s Omega grows from plot device to protagonist.
Verdict: Watch it. The clones’ story the movies never told, the aftermath, and the cost.
