The cozy classic procedural with a hook: John Nolan (Nathan Fillion, cashing all his Castle charm), a freshly divorced man who walks into a bank robbery and walks out with a new life, becomes the oldest rookie in LAPD history. The age inversion is the engine: a rookie with life experience the twentysomethings lack, but a body learning the job a decade late.
Fillion’s likability carries it, but the ensemble grows on you hard: Chen and Bradford’s training arc (the show’s best slowly building relationship), the serialized arcs (the serial stalker season, the corruption arcs) give it binge weight. It never aims for prestige and never needs to: a solid hour with people you like doing work that matters, and seven seasons in the machine still purrs. The modern Castle.
Verdict: Watch it as cozy classic. The best “on in the background, then suddenly you care” show on network TV.
