Our Review
The buddy cop MCU show with a conscience: Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) wrestles with whether to take up the shield America wants to hand him, while the government hands it to someone else (Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, a decent man cracking under an impossible mantle, the show’s most interesting character), and Bucky works through his amends list with a therapist who forces the two men into actual therapy scenes. The globetrotting plot (the Flag Smashers, the post-Blip refugee crisis, a genuinely bold topical swing) gives Karli Morgenthau more moral complexity than MCU villains usually get.
The best material is the smallest: the Louisiana boat repair episode, Isaiah Bradley’s story (the Black super soldier America experimented on and erased, the show’s blow to the stomach, and Carl Lumbly’s performance is why the finale’s museum scene lands), the couples counseling comedy beats. Uneven, the Flag Smashers plot strains, the ending rushes, but the character work earns the mantle passing.
Verdict: Watch it for Mackie’s arc. The shield deserved this conversation.
