Spider-Noir tells the story of Ben Reilly, a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city's one and only superhero.

Our Review

Nicolas Cage as a 1930s hard-drinking private-eye Spider-Man, in live action. If that sentence thrills you — and it should — the show delivers the premise: a Depression-era New York where a broken-down detective with spider powers (Cage, all hangdog growl and broken-knuckle conviction) works cases that tangle with gangsters, corrupt cops, and something supernatural nesting under the city.

The production shoots noir properly — rain-slick streets, chiaroscuro bars, voiceover that knows exactly how self-aware to be. The mystery arc builds to a climax that honors both the superhero and the noir register, and the show understands its gimmick is durable: Spider-Man’s power-and-responsibility creed is a perfect noir code. Cage, brooding under a fedora, swinging from a fire escape — television has few pleasures this pure.

Verdict: Watch it. It shouldn’t work this well. It does.
