The perfect Saturday morning cartoon, built by Ben Edlund from his self published comic and aimed at kids who paid attention. The Tick (Townsend Coleman’s full chest, Cam Clarke’s entire career as Arthur) is superhero absurdity done in seven minutes a side, and the writing density is closer to Arrested Development than Filmation.
Superfiancés, the Tick’s theme song you cannot not sing, the Chair, Miss Lint, Arthur’s voice of reason as the straight man to a blue giant who says everything with his whole body: three seasons that never needed a single joke from the writers’ spare parts bin. It is also a masterclass in doing a lot with nothing, the animation is cheap, the show does not care, the writing is undefeated.
Watch it with a kid, laugh more than the kid does. Spoon!
