Four mutant turtles, a rat sensei, a pizza fixation, and a theme song that infected a generation. The 1987 series took Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s indie comic, ran it through the kid friendly filter of the decade, and became the biggest toy driven cartoon of its era: 191 episodes of monster of the week with Shredder, Krang and Bebop steady as the recurring furniture.
It is genuinely funny in a cheap way. The turtles bicker like actual siblings, Michelangelo’s catchphrases were real playground slang for about a year, and the show trusts slapstick over plot. The laugh track dates it, the animation is famously economical, and the voice cast leans into every bit with a warmth that sells the absurdity rather than apologizing for it.
The original run, not the nineties reboots, and the earlier seasons especially, when the joke was that they were kids first and heroes second.
