Our Review
The title is a bait and switch, and that is the point. What looks like a cozy reboot of a beloved old courtroom series is really a stealth thriller about grief, the opioid crisis, and revenge, with Kathy Bates playing a septuagenarian lawyer who joins a prestigious firm while quietly playing a much longer game than anyone around her suspects.
Bates is the engine of the whole thing. She plays brilliant and harmless at the same time, letting the audience in on the con while her new colleagues underestimate her week after week. When the mask slips, the show earns real dramatic weight; when she is working a case, it functions as a solid legal procedural with actual stakes underneath.
The supporting cast keeps up, and the writing guards its secrets well, feeding out revelations at a pace that respects your attention. A few standalone cases feel like filler, and the big conspiracy occasionally strains under its own ambition, but the show never loses sight of the human cost driving it all.
Our score: 8/10. If you want a network drama with a real engine under the hood, queue this up tonight and let Bates work on you.
