It is a crime against comedy history that Home Movies is the least remembered of the late 90s animator revolution. Brendon Small is a ten year old auteur shooting movies with his two best friends, his mother Lisa is going through a divorce with the worst possible choices, and his teacher Mr. Pincher is the most honest adult on television, which is to say not honest at all.
The early Comedy Central seasons are a cranky sketch machine; the Adult Swim seasons are a real sitcom with a continuity arc that builds to one of the great two part finales of its decade. The anime episodes, the Pincher wedding, the Lisa finale, these are not hidden gems, they are a top ten animated series that nobody watched. The cast, H. Jon Benjamin, H. Jon Benjamin again as everyone’s rival, Paul F. Tompkins as the anime obsessed rival, are a who’s who of the scene before the scene had a name.
52 episodes on the Max vault. The IMDb is 8.2, which is a number that should terrify anyone who has not seen it. Eight and a half out of ten, finale points awarded.
