One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. The 1994 Disney series about a clan of Scottish gargoyles awakened in modern Manhattan remains the single best thing Disney Television Animation ever produced. By day they sleep as stone, by night they protect the castle, and in 1994 that castle is a skyscraper owned by David Xanatos, one of TV’s all time great villains.
Shakespeare references, Scottish tragedy, a hero in Goliath whose every line Keith David delivers like thunder, and arcs that trusted kids with real consequence and moral complexity. Demona is still one of animation’s best villain tragic figures. The first two seasons are as close to a perfect animated serial as the 90s produced.
Our take: 9/10.
