The demon king is dead, the hero party won, and the elf mage who will live a thousand more years finally notices how brief her human friends’ lives were. Frieren then walks back through the world collecting moments she missed the first time, and the result is the gentlest, most profound anime in years.

It is about grief, memory, and paying attention to people while they are here, disguised as a fantasy road trip. Madhouse’s animation is luminous. Won every award it could and deserved all of them.
