Our Review

Disney+ finally pulled the trigger in September 2026: Darkwing Duck, the 1991 caped caricaturist from the Disney Afternoon, is ordered to series as a full revival, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey producing and Sean Tretta and Borja Pena Gorostegui running the show. Original creator Tad Stones is on board as a consultant, which is the right signal for a revival of a show this beloved.

The premise skips ahead. Darkwing has spent 35 years trapped in an alternate world that never heard of his heroic exploits, and a rebellious teenager named Duckie shows up to drag the vain, loud vigilante back into battle against old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt while reuniting him with Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana. The studio is promising amped up action and comedy without losing the Disney heart, which is exactly the balance the 2017 DuckTales reboot walked.

The voice cast is the story: Mark Hamill, the man who defined the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, takes over Drake Mallard himself. Seth Rogen is Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan is Gosalyn, Lilimar is Duckie, and the roster adds Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Tiffany Shepis, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich and Nat Faxon. Jim Cummings, the original voice and an Annie Award winner for the role, is not returning, and that alone will be the first argument every fan has.

Early word, no score until episodes exist. The original is the smartest show the Disney Afternoon ever made, so the risk here is reverence: everything announced so far leans into action and meta humor, and the Hamill casting tells you they are playing the character a lot more like a tired superhero than a bad actor playing one. If they land the heart as promised, this is the event of the year for anyone who grew up with it. No premiere date yet.
