The movie that broke the universe in half and made the argument feel real. After a mission goes wrong, the world’s governments move to regulate the Avengers, and the team splits down the middle: Tony Stark, drowning in guilt, signs the accords; Steve Rogers, who has watched institutions rot from the inside, refuses. Both men are right, which is why it still stings.
The airport battle is the series’ peak piece of pure spectacle, twelve heroes letting their powers argue,Spider-Man swinging in on a stolen Cap shield, Ant-Man riding an arrow. It is the toys out of the box scene every fan waited eight years for, staged with real spatial clarity. But the film’s spine is quieter: a brainwashed assassin, a dead mother, and a bunker in Siberia where the last fight is three men and a video tape. That final brawl, stripped of armies and stakes beyond friendship, is the most brutal thing Marvel has staged.
Chadwick Boseman and Tom Holland debut here, Black Panther as grief given a suit, Spider-Man as a fourteen minute cameo that instantly rebooted a franchise. Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo operates on a shoestring and outthinks gods, the rare villain whose plan works exactly as intended.
Our score: 9/10, and the rewatch holds up.
