Our Review
The show that proved the DCAU could invent, not just adapt. In 2039 Gotham, an aging Bruce Wayne (Conroy, magnificent as a bitter old man with a bad heart) passes the cowl to Terry McGinnis, a hot headed teenager with a high tech Batsuit. The premise could have been a cheap offshoot; instead it became one of the genre’s most thoughtful meditations on legacy: what does it mean to inherit someone else’s war?
The future Gotham is neon noir cyberpunk, the villains mix original creations (Inque, Blight) with legacy echoes, and the Return of the Joker movie, the uncut version, is one of the darkest, best things the DCAU ever made, closing the Tim Drake chapter with horror movie gravity. Years later, Justice League Unlimited‘s Epilogue retroactively made the whole show a secret masterpiece of the DCAU’s mythology.
Verdict: Watch it. The future of Batman was in good hands.
