The perfect anime-inflected adaptation: five teenage heroes — Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, Cyborg — living in a giant T, fighting villains, and processing adolescent angst with visual storytelling borrowed from the best of Japanese animation without losing its American identity. The show’s genius was structural: comedy episodes sitting beside devastating drama — Robin’s Slade obsession, and the Trigon arc, where Raven’s apocalyptic father gives season 4 a genuinely horror-tinged climax.
The long silences — whole sequences carried by animation alone — set it apart from every other American action cartoon. Every Titan gets a defining season, and Slade remains one of animation’s most effective villains precisely because his motives stay opaque. Things Change, the finale, refuses the easy ending — Terra’s return as a blank slate is still one of animation’s most debated final scenes.
Verdict: Watch it. The best teen superhero show ever animated, and it’s not close.
