This prequel follows the original Duttons on a wagon train heading west, and it plays the frontier as the death march it actually was: river crossings, bandits, and grief at every mile. Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill play it completely straight, and Isabel May’s narration gives it a literary weight Yellowstone never aims for.
Brutal, beautiful, and finite: it tells one complete story and ends. A genuine surprise for anyone who thinks of the franchise as just cowboy soap.
