Our Take

The empire montage: cooks stacked like a stock reel, money baled like hay, the machine purring — until the Hank problem forces the prison murders: ten witnesses in three prisons, two minutes, staged with clinical horror as Mike’s men die mid-shave, mid-page. The cost of the empire is now fully visible. And then the toilet: Hank, at Walt’s house, finding Leaves of Grass on the porcelain shelf, reading the inscription (“To my other favorite W.W.”), and understanding everything. The most famous act-break in TV history.
