Our Take

The partnership dies on screen: Walt, chasing Jesse’s phone for the ricin cigarette, triggers a fight in Jesse’s house that leaves Walt bleeding on the floor and the alliance over. Gus responds by firing Walt, and installing Jesse as the new cook. The episode’s final image is Walt, discarded, sitting in his basement assembling a weapon from a box of parts. The season’s midpoint: employment terminated, war begun.
