Our Take

The Gus flashback: young Gustavo Fring and his partner Max presenting meth to Don Eladio in 1989, and the pool where Max’s blood spreads as Gus, held down, watches. The cartel’s message — this is what happens to interlopers — becomes the origin of everything: Gus’s chicken empire, his patience, his twenty-year revenge. In the present, Hank follows the shell company trail to Pollos Hermanos while Gus plays the harmless businessman perfectly. The season’s best hour of pure chess.
