The reboot that worked, and still the best looking film the franchise has produced. Matthew Vaughn throws the entire Singer aesthetic out the window: color, movement, 1962, the Cuban missile crisis as the mutant coming out story, the whole team in matching jumpsuits learning to use their gifts in a mansion full of new toys.
McAvoy and Fassbender erase any argument about recasts in the first scene they share, the Sebastian Shaw of it all, the Holocaust opening is the best ten minutes of the entire Fox run, and the final submarine sequence lands a period twist on the X-Men myth nobody had the nerve to try. The 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.7 on IMDb are honest numbers for a film that simply does not have a bad act.
On Disney+ and Hulu. If you watch one Fox X-Men film before Doomsday brings the cast back into conversation, First Class is the most fun one. Eight out of ten.
