The franchise’s first real stumble and still not the disaster its reputation suggests: Brett Ratner inherited a broken production, the writer strike was approaching, and the Phoenix saga got compressed into the B plot of a cure storyline that is genuinely interesting for its first hour. Jean Grey’s return as Dark Phoenix gets about twenty minutes of the film she deserved.
The Alcatraz finale has real weight, Xavier’s death scene plays beautifully against the X mansion auditorium, and the 6.7 on IMDb from nearly half a million voters is fair to a movie that wastes Vinnie Jones on Blob and turns Storm into weather. What survives is the question the movie asks: if your cure existed, would you take it, the whole mutant metaphor collapsing into a pharmacy window, which is a genuinely bitter idea the film never fully earns but never flinches from.
